SEO tactics to avoid
By Jill Kocher
June 1, 2009
You know there are search engine optimization tactics you should steer clear of. But which are the worst of the worst?
The list of SEO tactics to avoid depends heavily on how risk averse a site owner is. For instance, I work primarily with big brand e-commerce and media sites, so my risk tolerance matches my clients' risk tolerance — very low.
A persistent SEO myth is that once you have optimized a site for SEO, the job is done. This was true before Google but everything changed whem Google introduced "Google Page Rank", its patented search algorythmn. This is not named for "ranking pages" but for its author, Google co-founder Larry Page. This algorythmn incorporated not just "on page factors" in determining search results but added weighting for how many inbound links pointed to a site and also measured how "important" the sites were that the links were from.
How can you use PR to boost site search rank?
Make sure you list your site with associations and directories because part of Google’s site rank formula is the number and importance of inbound links.
Make sure all Press Releases are optimized for SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Insert an anchor text link to the site as often as possible.
Deploy as many web videos as possible. These get indexed in Google’s Universal Search results and can boost site rank as well.
